Mango variety: Pusa Arunima

Background:
Inadequate availability of quality planting material of new mango varieties is the major hurdle in their early commercialization. Hence, it takes long time for spread and commercialization of new genotypes especially which are having export potential. The vegetative method of propagation by the Public sector facilities are unable to fulfill the demand for bulk requirements for large scale planting. Technology Details:
Upscaling and mass multiplication of the new mango varieties through licensing by the nurserymen/ entrepreneur is the best model for early commercialization of these new mango hybrids. This intervention would help in popularization and early establishment of orchards under these new mango hybrids in clusters. This intervention would also help in large scale production of planting material for enhancing area under production of these varieties to meet the demand of local and export markets. The agreement would help in sharing of genuine mother plants along with scion sticks to the Licensee. Further, complete technical know-how of licensed variety for their vegetative multiplication would help in achieving commercial success. Pusa Arunima is a hybrid, derived from the cross between Amrapali and Sensation. The plants are semi-vigorous and are suitable for closer planting (6 m x 6 m). It is a regular bearer and starts bearing after 4 years of planting. It ripens late in the season and its fruits are ready for harvesting by 1st week of August. The fruit size is medium (250 g) having attractive red peel colour. It has medium total soluble solids (19.5oBrix), rich in vitamin ‘C’ (43.6 mg/ 100 g pulp) and good β carotene content. It has good flavour with very long shelf-life (10-12 days) at room temperature after ripening. Pusa Arunima is suitable for domestic and overseas markets, because of its attractive red coloured peel, fiberless pulp, mild flavour, medium TSS, excellent sugar: acid blend and very good-shelf-life.
